THE defence in the Vybz Kartel murder trial yesterday kept up the attack against a police expert

THE defence in the Vybz Kartel murder trial yesterday kept up the attack against a police expert who was forced to defend the integrity of his analysis of call and text data from telecoms company Digicel.

Corporal Shawn Brown underwent a bout of intense grilling from Pierre Rogers and Tom Tavares-Finson on his last day on the stand in the trial that started in the Home Circuit Court last November.

During the process, Brown agreed to a suggestion from Rogers — who is representing co-accused Kahira Jones — that he had taken texts regarding the word Lizzy out of context. He said, too, that his analysis of those texts was not detailed.

He agreed that he didn’t make detailed observation of questionable call data information, and that he never included at least two questionable calls into his analysis presented to the jury.

Still, he disagreed with a suggestion that his analysis was “unfair” and “incomplete”.

With that, Rogers suggested that his analysis was conducted in a way to “secure a conviction”. Brown denied this suggestion too.

Brown was then re-examined by senior prosecutor Jeremy Taylor. The re-examination resulted in Tavares-Finson, who is representing Vybz Kartel, having to again cross-examine Brown, this time on text messages that weren’t before brought up before.

In the texts, co-accused Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell sent a message in August 2011 following the August 16 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, saying that he wasn’t involved “inna nuttin” and that he did nothing.

Tavares-Finson accused Brown of taking the texts out of context on the instruction of the prosecution. But Taylor protested. And, Tavares-Finson repeated his assertion. “The jurors have eyes,” Tavares-Finson said after Taylor again protested.

Earlier, Brown admitted, under cross-examination from Tamika Harris (Andre St John’s attorney), that the information on the disc from Digicel, from which he created his call and text schedules, could be copied to another disc.

Vybz Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer; Campbell; Shane Williams; St John; and Jones have been on trial before Justice Lennox Campbell for Williams’ murder.
